Xifaxan DT is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient rifaximin. It is an antibiotic that is primarily used to treat certain gastrointestinal conditions. 

Xifaxan DT is specifically designed to target bacterial infections in the intestines and is not absorbed into the bloodstream like other antibiotics

. Xifaxan DT is commonly used to treat the following conditions:

  1. Travelers' diarrhea: Xifaxan DT is effective in treating travelers' diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) in adults and children who are at least 12 years old.
  2. Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D): Xifaxan DT is indicated for the treatment of IBS-D in adults. Clinical trials have shown that patients experienced lasting relief from abdominal pain and diarrhea with a 2-week course of treatment.

Xifaxan DT works differently from other antibiotics. While most antibiotics are absorbed into the bloodstream, Xifaxan DT passes through the stomach and into the intestines without being absorbed. This allows it to directly target and treat bacterial infections in the intestinal tract.
