Tykerb (Lapatinib)

Do’s

• Before starting Tykerb and each time you refill your prescription, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
• The dosage of Tykerb is determined by your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding the prescribed dosage.
• Tykerb should be taken orally, either 1 hour before or 1 hour after a meal. It is usually taken once daily. Strictly adhere to the prescribed frequency of administration.
• Make sure to inform your healthcare provider about all the products you are using, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products to avoid any potential interactions or adverse effects.
• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions on how to correctly take other medications, such as capecitabine or letrozole, along with Tykerb.

Don’ts

• Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage.
• Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while using Tykerb, unless your healthcare provider explicitly says it is safe to do so. Grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects when combined with this medication.
• Since Tykerb can be absorbed through the skin and lungs, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling this medication or inhaling the dust from the tablets.

Common Side Effects:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea and vomiting 
• Fatigue
• Skin Rash
• Hand-foot syndrome (redness, swelling, and pain on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet)

Less Common Side Effects:

•  Headache
• Muscle pain
• Joint pain
• Changes in taste
• Changes in liver function tests

Tykerb has been shown to cause liver damage. Monitor liver function regularly during treatment. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or persistent nausea and vomiting, as these may indicate liver problems.

Tykerb may affect the heart and can lead to decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Undergo regular cardiac monitoring during treatment. If your LVEF decreases or drops below the normal range, your healthcare provider may adjust your treatment plan.

Diarrhea is a common side effect of Tykerb. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience severe or persistent diarrhea. They may provide guidance on managing this side effect and may adjust your dosage if necessary.

Tykerb may harm an unborn baby, and it is not recommended during pregnancy. Use effective contraception during treatment and discuss family planning with your healthcare provider. 

Tykerb should not be used while breastfeeding, as it may pass into breast milk and harm the nursing infant.

Tykerb can cause skin rash and other skin reactions. If you develop a rash or any skin changes, inform your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on managing these reactions.
