Topicort Ointment (Desoximetasone)

Do’s

• Topicort ointment should be used only on the skin.
• Before applying the medication, wash and dry your hands. 
• Clean and dry the affected area before applying the ointment.
• Apply a thin film of the medication to the affected area and gently rub it in as directed by your healthcare provider. This is usually done twice daily.
• Use Topicort ointment only for the condition prescribed. If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Do not apply the ointment to the face, groin, or underarms unless directed by your healthcare provider.
• Do not cover, bandage, or wrap the treated area after applying the medication, unless directed by your healthcare provider.
• When applying the medication near the eyes, avoid getting it in the eyes as this may worsen or cause glaucoma. Also, avoid getting the medication in the nose or mouth. If contact occurs, rinse with plenty of water
• Do not use this medication for longer than prescribed.

• Thinning skin
• Easy bruising
• Changes in body fat distribution, especially in the face, neck, back, and waist
• Increased acne or facial hair
• Menstrual problems
• Impotence or loss of interest in sex

Topically applied corticosteroids, such as Topicort ointment, can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects. This is more likely to occur with high doses, long-term use, or when applied to large areas of the body. Follow the prescribed dosage and duration of use.

Dose selection for elderly patients should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range. This is because elderly patients may have decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, as well as concomitant diseases or other drug therapies.

To minimize potential exposure to the breastfed infant via breast milk, use Topicort ointment on the smallest area of skin and for the shortest duration possible while breastfeeding. Avoid applying the medication directly to the nipple and areola to avoid direct infant exposure.

Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to Topicort or other corticosteroids. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Topicort ointment may interact with other medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
