Thyroid (Dessicated Thyroid)

Do's

• The dosage of Thyroid is based on the individual's medical condition, lab tests, and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also based on age/weight.
• It is usually taken once daily on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast.
• Use this medication regularly to obtain the most benefit from it. Taking it at the same time each day can help remember to take it.
• Do not stop taking this medication without consulting a healthcare provider, as thyroid replacement treatment is usually taken for life.
• Certain medications, such as antacids, cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevelam, and others, can decrease the absorption of thyroid hormone. Separate the intake of these medications from Thyroid by at least 4 hours.
• Report any worsening of symptoms or persistence of symptoms after several weeks of taking the medication, such as tiredness, muscle aches, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, slow heartbeat, or sensitivity to cold.

Common Side Effects:

• Temporary hair loss, especially in children
• Headache
• Irritability
• Leg cramps
• Nervousness
• Sensitivity to heat
• Sweating
• Trouble breathing
• Trouble sleeping
• Vomiting
• Weight loss

Allergic Reactions:

Seek emergency medical help if signs of an allergic reaction occur, such as:

• Hive
• Difficult breathing
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Other Potential Side Effects:

• Fast or pounding heartbeats
• Feeling hot or nervous
• Chest pain
• Hypersensitivity to thyroid hormone
• Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) uncomplicated by hypothyroidism
• Untreated thyrotoxicosis
• Untreated adrenal insufficiency.
• Symptoms of low thyroid hormone levels, such as tiredness, muscle aches, constipation, dry skin, slow heartbeat, or sensitivity to cold

Individuals should not take Thyroid if they are allergic to thyroid desiccated or any ingredients contained in this drug. In case of an allergic reaction, immediate medical assistance should be sought.

Keep this medication out of reach of children. In case of an overdose, medical help or contact with a Poison Control Center should be sought immediately.

Thyroid has mild interactions with at least 26 different drugs. Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all the products they use and keep a list of all medications to share with their healthcare providers.

The use of thyroid hormones in the therapy of obesity, alone or combined with other drugs, is unjustified and has been shown to be ineffective. Similarly, the use of thyroid hormones is not justified for the treatment of male or female infertility unless accompanied by hypothyroidism.
