Tegretol (carbamazepine) is indicated for the treatment of certain types of seizures, including partial, tonic-clonic, and mixed seizures. It is also used to manage nerve pain caused by trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. Tegretol is not a general pain reliever and should not be used for common aches or pains.
Do not take this drug if you have a history of bone marrow depression, are allergic to carbamazepine or similar drugs like tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), or take nefazodone. Avoid Tegretol if you have used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the past 14 days.

It may also cause liver problems, with symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, stomach pain, easy bruising, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite.
