Synthroid (Levothyroxine)

Do’s

• Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by the pharmacist before starting Synthroid and consult a healthcare provider with any questions.
• The dosage of Synthroid is determined based on various factors such as age, weight, medical condition, lab test results, response to treatment, and other medications being taken. Inform your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
• Take Synthroid by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. It should be taken with a full glass of water unless directed otherwise.
• If you are taking the capsule form, swallow it whole. For those who cannot swallow the capsule whole, the tablet form can be used.
• For infants or children who cannot swallow whole tablets, the tablet can be crushed, mixed in 1 to 2 teaspoons of water, and given using a spoon or dropper immediately. 
• Use Synthroid regularly to derive the most benefit from it. Take it at the same time each day to help remember.
• Certain medications can decrease the absorption of thyroid hormone. If taking any of these drugs, separate them from Synthroid by at least 4 hours.
• Symptoms of low thyroid hormone levels should be reported to the healthcare provider. These may include tiredness, muscle aches, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, slow heartbeat, or sensitivity to cold.

Don’ts

• Do not split, crush, or chew the capsule. 
• Do not prepare a supply in advance or mix the tablet in soy infant formula.
• Do not discontinue the medication without consulting your healthcare provider, as thyroid replacement treatment is typically taken for life.
• There are different brands of levothyroxine available. Do not change brands without consulting your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects

• Increased appetite
• Feeling hot
• Changes in menstrual periods
• Diarrhea
• Skin rash
• Partial hair loss

Long-Term and Age-Related Effects:

Older adults may have a higher risk of heart-related side effects with Synthroid, such as heart palpitations and an increased heart rate. 

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare provider.

Before taking any medication, including Synthroid, consult a healthcare provider to ensure that the use of the medication is safe, appropriate, and effective for the individual. Seek guidance before making any changes to the diet or starting or discontinuing any course of treatment.

If signs or symptoms of overdosage occur, Synthroid dosage should be reduced or discontinued temporarily. Appropriate supportive treatment should be initiated based on the patient's medical status. 

Synthroid is contraindicated in patients with uncorrected adrenal insufficiency. Be aware of any contraindications before using the medication.

Synthroid should not be discontinued during pregnancy, and hypothyroidism diagnosed during pregnancy should be promptly treated. TSH levels may increase during pregnancy, so TSH should be monitored, and Synthroid dose adjusted as needed. Consult a healthcare provider if considering breastfeeding while taking Synthroid.

Synthroid should not be used to treat obesity or as a weight loss aid.
