Skelaxin (metaxalone) is primarily indicated for the relief of discomforts associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. This includes conditions like muscle spasms and pain. It is typically used alongside other measures such as rest and physical therapy.

The mode of action of Skelaxin is not entirely clear, but it's believed to be related to its sedative properties. It's thought to relieve pain by relaxing the nerves that cause your muscles to tighten or cramp up.

Taking Skelaxin with food may enhance general CNS depression. Elderly patients may be especially susceptible to this effect. Skelaxin may impair mental and/or physical abilities required for the performance of hazardous tasks, such as operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle, especially when used with alcohol or other CNS depressants.

The sedative effects of Skelaxin and other CNS depressants may be additive. Caution should be exercised with patients who take more than one of these CNS depressants simultaneously.
