Seroquel (Quetiapine)

Read the Medication Guide and any other patient information provided by your pharmacist before starting Seroquel and each time you get a refill. Ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions.

Take Seroquel exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually 2-3 times per day with or without food. For bipolar depression, it is usually taken once daily at bedtime.

The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you take. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all products you use, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Your healthcare provider may start you on a low dose of Seroquel and gradually increase your dose over time to reduce side effects. Follow their instructions carefully.

Take Seroquel at the same time(s) each day to help you remember. Continue taking it even if you feel well to prevent symptoms from returning.

Do not increase your dose or use Seroquel more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.

If you miss a dose of Seroquel, take it as soon as you remember unless it is closer to your next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once.

Tell your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve or get worse while taking Seroquel. Your dose may need adjustment. Also, report any new or worsening side effects.

Do not stop taking Seroquel without consulting your healthcare provider, as some conditions may become worse when stopped abruptly. Your healthcare provider may decrease your dose gradually to minimize withdrawal symptoms.

Common Side Effects: 

• Sleepiness
• Dry mouth
• Dizziness
• Constipation
• Weight gain

Mild Side Effects: 

• Abdominal pain
• Abnormal vision
• Decrease in appetite
• Drowsiness
• Fast or irregular heartbeat
• Headache
• Increased sweating
• Indigestion
• Stuffy or runny nose

Serious Side Effects: 

• Tardive dyskinesia
• Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults taking antidepressants
• Increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis
• Changes in certain liver enzyme levels
• Low blood pressure when changing positions
• Sore throat
• Weakness

Discuss any bothersome or long-lasting side effects with your healthcare provider. If you experience any new or worsening symptoms during your Seroquel treatment, report them to your healthcare provider right away.

Consult a healthcare provider before taking any medication, including Seroquel. This includes discussing any existing medical conditions, ongoing treatments, and potential drug interactions. A healthcare provider can provide personalized guidance and ensure that the use of Seroquel is safe and appropriate for you.

Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Seroquel, as dangerous side effects could occur. Alcohol may interact with the medication and exacerbate certain effects.

Getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position while taking Seroquel may cause dizziness. Avoid sudden position changes and be cautious until the effects of Seroquel on the individual are known.

Individuals taking Seroquel should avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise, in hot weather, or by not drinking enough fluids. It is recommended to drink plenty of liquids while using Seroquel.

Certain populations, such as seniors, children, individuals with specific medical conditions (e.g., liver or kidney problems, heart disease, diabetes, seizures), or those taking other medications, may be at a higher risk of developing a wider range of side effects.
