Rythmol (Propafenone)

Do’s

• Take Rythmol by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider, usually every 8 hours.
• Take Rythmol regularly to get the most benefit from it. Take it at the same time each day to help you remember.
• Tell your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or worsens.

Don'ts

• Don't take Rythmol as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• Don't eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice unless your healthcare provider says it's safe. Grapefruit can increase side effects.

Common side effects:

• Dizziness
• Blurred vision
• Loss of appetite
• Unusual taste
• Fatigue
• Constipation
• Headache
• Reduced cardiac conduction
• Nausea
• Vomiting

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

• Serious heart problems, especially if used with certain other medications for infections, asthma, heart problems, high blood pressure, depression, mental illness, cancer, malaria, or HIV.
• Allergic reactions, such as abdominal cramps, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, or swelling of the face and throat
• Proarrhythmia (increased risk of irregular heart rhythms)
• Serious side effects on the eyes, such as changes in vision or eye pain.
• Lung problems, including increased wheezing, cough, or phlegm.
• Mental/mood changes, such as confusion or hallucinations.
• Fast or slow heart rate, chest pain, or passing out.
• Serious allergic reactions, including rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Rythmol,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have and your medical history, especially breathing problems, kidney problems, liver problems, myasthenia gravis, or Brugada Syndrome.

Rythmol may cause QT prolongation, a heart rhythm condition. This can be serious and requires immediate medical attention.

The risk of QT prolongation increases with certain health conditions and medications. Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take and if you have any heart problems, a family history of heart rhythm problems, or electrolyte imbalances (low potassium or magnesium).

Rythmol may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you know how you react to the medication.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take before any surgery.

Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects, especially QT prolongation.

Rythmol may affect male fertility.

Discuss the risks and benefits of taking Rythmol with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. In rare cases, Rythmol may worsen irregular heartbeat. There's a possibility you might need to be monitored in the hospital when starting treatment.
