Rowasa Kit (Mesalamine)

Do’s

• If available, read the leaflet provided by your pharmacist before starting to use Rowasa Kit and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
• Rowasa Kit is intended for rectal use. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions and use the medication as directed. Typically, it is used once daily at bedtime.
• The dosage of Rowasa Kit is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage for you.
• Unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider, drink plenty of fluids during treatment with Rowasa Kit. This will help prevent kidney stones.
• Before use, visually inspect the contents of the bottle. The medication should be off-white to tan in color. A slight darkening of the medication is expected, but if the enema turns dark brown, it should be discarded.
• This medication works best if you have a bowel movement before using it. Shake the bottle well. Hold the bottle at the neck and remove the cover from the applicator tip. Lie on your left side with your right knee bent.
• Insert the tip of the bottle into the rectum, pointing toward the navel. Gently and steadily squeeze out the entire contents of the bottle. Remove the bottle and remain in position for 30 minutes. Try to keep the medication in the rectum for 8 hours.
• After use, throw away the empty bottle as directed by your healthcare provider.
• Be aware that this medication may stain surfaces it touches, such as clothing, floor, and counter surfaces.
• Use Rowasa Kit regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it. This will help you remember to use it consistently.
• If your condition lasts or gets worse, inform your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects:

• Abdominal pain or cramping
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Gas
• Nausea
• Rectal discomfort or pain
• Worsening of ulcerative colitis symptoms

Rare, Serious Side Effects:

• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing
• Severe abdominal pain or cramping
• Severe diarrhea or bloody stools
• Severe headache
• Signs of kidney problems (e.g., changes in urine frequency or color, swelling in the ankles or feet)
• Signs of liver problems (e.g., yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent nausea or vomiting)
• Chest pain or shortness of breath

If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, seek medical attention immediately.

If you have a known allergy to mesalamine, salicylates, sulfites, or any other component of Rowasa Kit, you should not use this medication. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction.

The use of Rowasa Kit during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with your healthcare provider. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, but there are limited human studies. The benefits of using Rowasa Kit in pregnant or breastfeeding women may outweigh the risks, still, consulting your healthcare provider is recommended.

Although overt renal toxicity has not been observed, the potential for renal toxicity should be considered. Mesalamine, the active ingredient in Rowasa Kit, is poorly absorbed from the colon and is excreted primarily in the feces. If you experience any changes in urine frequency or color, or swelling in the ankles or feet, inform your healthcare provider.

Rowasa Kit is intended for rectal use only. It should not be taken orally. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider for proper administration.

Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements. Certain medications may interact with Rowasa Kit, potentially affecting its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects.

Store Rowasa Kit at controlled room temperature, typically between 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F). Once the foil-wrapped unit of seven bottles is opened, all enemas should be used promptly as directed by your healthcare provider.
