Renvela (Sevelamer Carbonate)

Do’s

• Take Renvela by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 3 times daily with meals. Swallow the tablet whole.
• The dosage is based on your medical condition, any other medications you take to lower your phosphate levels, and your response to treatment. In children, the dosage is also based on body size.
• If you are taking the powder form of Renvela, check the manufacturer package directions for mixing it with water, beverage, or food and taking it within 30 minutes. 
• Follow the directions for the proper amount of water to use for your dose. Stir the mixture well and drink all of it. If the powder settles to the bottom of the cup, stir again right before drinking. You may also mix the powder with a small amount of food or beverage to take as part of a meal.
• Take this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to take it 3 times a day with meals, or on the schedule given to you by your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet.
• If mixing the powder form of Renvela with food or beverage, do not heat the powder or add it to heated foods or liquids.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite
• Upset stomach, gas, bloating
• Diarrhea, constipation
• Tired feeling
• Itching
• Joint pain

Severe Side Effects:

• Seek emergency medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction to Renvela, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Stop using Renvela and call your healthcare provider at once if you experience choking or trouble swallowing, black, bloody, or tarry stools, severe constipation with stomach pain, or constipation that gets worse or does not clear up.

Renvela may cause gastrointestinal effects, including severe problems in the digestive tract such as blockages and holes. Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of swallowing disorders, digestive tract surgery, or severe constipation.

Store Renvela at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed.

Do not use Renvela if you have a history of bowel obstruction or if you are allergic to sevelamer carbonate or sevelamer hydrochloride or to any of the ingredients in Renvela. Report new onset or worsening of existing constipation or bloody stools promptly to a healthcare provider.

Avoid taking any other medicines within 1 hour before or 3 hours after taking Renvela, as sevelamer can bind to other medications and make them less effective.
