Nitro Dur Patch (Nitroglycerin)

Do’s

• Before using the Nitro Dur Patch, read the patient information leaflet provided by your pharmacist. This leaflet contains important information about the medication.
• Remove the patch from its pouch and peel off the protective clear liner as directed.
• Choose a suitable area on your body to apply the patch. The upper arm or chest are commonly used, but you can also apply it anywhere on the body below the neck and above the knees or elbows.
• Make sure the area is clean, dry, and free of hair. You can clip the hair in the area.
• Wait until your skin is completely dry before applying the patch. Press the patch firmly in place with the palm of your hand.
• Wash your hands after applying the patch.
• Follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider. Typically, one patch is used per day. Wear the patch for 12 to 14 hours as directed.
• The dosage may vary depending on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage for you.
• To reduce skin irritation, apply each new patch to a different area of the skin. After removing the old patch, fold it in half with the sticky sides together and discard it out of reach of children and pets.
• Use the medication regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it. Following a consistent schedule can help you remember to use the patch.
• Although unlikely, long-term use of this medication may result in decreased effectiveness. If you notice that the medication is not working as well as before (e.g., worsening chest pain or more frequent occurrences), inform your healthcare provider. They may need to adjust your dosage or prescribe an alternative treatment.

Don’ts

• Avoid shaving the area of application.
• Avoid placing the patch on areas with cuts or irritation.
• Do not apply the patch immediately after bathing or showering.
• Do not suddenly stop using this medication without consulting your healthcare provider. Abruptly stopping the medication can worsen certain conditions. If you need to stop using Nitro Dur Patch, your healthcare provider will provide guidance on how to gradually decrease your dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Headache
• Dizziness and lightheadedness
• Nausea
• Flushing

Not everyone will experience these side effects, and some individuals may experience different or additional side effects. If you have any concerns about the side effects of the Nitro Dur Patch or if you experience any unusual or severe symptoms, consult your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Do not use Nitro Dur Patch if you are allergic to any type of adhesive on a bandage or other transdermal skin patch. If you have experienced an allergic reaction to nitroglycerin or any other medications in the past, inform your healthcare provider.

Nitro Dur Patch may interact with other medications. Avoid taking erectile dysfunction medicines (such as Viagra, Cialis, and others) while using Nitro Dur Patch, as it can cause a sudden and serious decrease in blood pressure. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

If you are scheduled to undergo an MRI test, inform the testing personnel that you are using the Nitro Dur Patch. Some patches may contain metals that can cause serious burns during an MRI. Your healthcare provider will advise you on whether you need to remove the patch before the test and how to do so properly.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of Nitro Dur Patch, especially dizziness and lightheadedness, which could increase the risk of falls. Take precautions and be cautious when getting up from a lying position.

Nitro Dur Patch should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before using the medication.

In some cases, tolerance to the effects of nitroglycerin patches may develop within the first 24 hours of therapy. Even with dose adjustments, efficacy may not be fully restored. If you notice a decrease in the effectiveness of the medication, inform your healthcare provider.
