Mirapex ER (Pramipexole)

Do’s

• The dosage of Mirapex ER is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your healthcare provider may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it to achieve the desired therapeutic effect. The dosage may be adjusted periodically to optimize the treatment outcome.
• Mirapex ER should be taken orally once daily. Swallow the tablet whole.
• Taking Mirapex ER with food may help lessen nausea. However, follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding whether to take it with or without food.
• If you temporarily stop taking Mirapex ER, you may need to start the medication again at a low dose and gradually increase it. Discuss with your healthcare provider how to restart the medication properly.
• It may take a few weeks for the effects of Mirapex ER to be noticed. If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets, doing so can release all of the drugs at once, increasing the risk of side effects 
• Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than directed.
• Do not stop taking Mirapex ER without consulting your healthcare provider. Suddenly stopping the medication may worsen your condition or cause withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, depression, confusion, fever, and muscle stiffness. If your healthcare provider decides to discontinue the medication, they may lower your dose gradually to help prevent withdrawal symptoms.

• Daytime sleepiness or drowsiness
• Apathy, anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, sweating, and pain
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Tiredness

Consult with your healthcare provider if you experience any side effects while taking Mirapex ER. They can provide guidance and determine the best course of action.

Some individuals taking Mirapex ER have reported falling asleep during normal daytime activities such as working, talking, eating, or driving. Exercise caution and avoid potentially dangerous activities if you experience increased sleepiness or drowsiness.

When discontinuing Mirapex ER or other dopamine agonists, some individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms such as apathy, anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, sweating, and pain. Inform patients about potential withdrawal symptoms and monitor them during and after discontinuation.

Mirapex ER may have additive effects when taken with other sedating medications or alcohol. Caution should be exercised when combining Mirapex ER with these substances.

During initial therapy, hypotension (low blood pressure) may occur more frequently. Patients should be cautious when rising rapidly after sitting or lying down, especially at the initiation of treatment with Mirapex ER.

Mirapex ER has been associated with intense urges to spend money, gamble, engage in increased sexual urges, and binge eating. Patients and other healthcare providers should be alerted to the possibility of experiencing these intense urges and the inability to control them while taking Mirapex ER.

While rare, serious allergic reactions to Mirapex ER can occur. Seek immediate medical help if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
