Midamor (Amiloride) is used in combination with other "water pills"/diuretics, such as furosemide and thiazide diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide, to address high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, or excess fluid in the body (edema). Lowering high blood pressure aids in preventing strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Amiloride is classified as a potassium-sparing diuretic, which works by causing the body to eliminate extra salt and water while preventing the kidneys from getting rid of too much potassium. This mechanism is crucial in managing fluid retention and maintaining potassium levels.

Amiloride also helps to treat or prevent low blood potassium levels caused by other diuretics, thereby ensuring a balanced potassium level in the body.

Do’s

  • Take Midamor by mouth with food, exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily. Food helps reduce stomach upset.
  • Take Midamor at least 4 hours before bedtime to avoid needing to urinate at night.
  • Take Midamor consistently at the same time each day for best results.
  • Continue taking Midamor even if you feel well, as high blood pressure often has no noticeable symptoms.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your blood pressure remains high or increases despite taking Midamor.

Don'ts

  • Don't take Midamor without food, as it can upset your stomach.
  • Don't take more Midamor than prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Don't skip doses or stop taking Midamor without talking to your healthcare provider first.

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Signs of kidney problems, such as changes in the amount of urine
  • Electrolyte imbalance and BUN increases, particularly when used with other diuretics
  • Hyponatremia and hypochloremia when used with other diuretics
  • Increased BUN levels, especially in seriously ill patients with vigorous fluid elimination
  • Symptoms of dehydration or mineral loss, such as very dry mouth, extreme thirst, muscle cramps, weakness, fast heartbeat, severe dizziness, confusion, fainting, and seizures when used with other diuretics

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

  • Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or throat
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Lack of energy
  • Pain in the upper right part of the stomach
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Flu-like symptoms with a rash, red or purple rash turning into blisters, or peeling of the skin
  • Worsening symptoms of heart failure, such as shortness of breath, swelling ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, or sudden weight gain

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Midamor,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Disclose any allergies you have to Amiloride or other medication ingredients.

Inform your healthcare provider about untreated electrolyte imbalances, particularly high potassium or low sodium levels. Discuss any history of kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, or dehydration.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products) before surgery.

Midamor may cause dizziness. Avoid activities requiring alertness (driving, operating machinery) until you feel safe. Limit alcohol and marijuana use which can worsen these effects.

Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can lead to dehydration and dizziness. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience these. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.

Midamor can increase your potassium levels. Restrict foods high in potassium like bananas and orange juice. Consult your healthcare provider before using potassium-containing products (supplements, salt substitutes).

Midamor should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. It's unknown if Midamor passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.

Midamor can cause high potassium levels (hyperkalemia). This risk is higher in older adults and those with kidney disease, diabetes, or serious illness. Your healthcare provider will closely monitor your potassium levels regularly while taking Midamor. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop any symptoms of high potassium levels, including muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat, or numb/tingling skin.

Keep track of all medications you take (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products). Share the Drug Interaction lists with your healthcare provider. This allows them to identify potential interactions with Midamor.

Avoid medication adjustments without consulting your healthcare provider. Never start, stop, or change the dosage of any medications on your own.

Midamor can interact with certain medications, including:

  • Lithium
  • Sodium phosphate products
  • Other medications that may increase potassium levels (examples provided)

Some medications can raise blood pressure or worsen heart failure. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you use, especially cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs (ibuprofen/naproxen).

Midamor may affect certain lab tests (like glucose tolerance testing). Inform laboratory personnel and all your healthcare providers that you use this medication.
