Lovaza (Omega 3 acid ethyl esters)

Do's

• Take Lovaza orally with food at the prescribed dosage and frequency, typically once or twice daily. 
• Swallow capsules whole. 
• Consult your healthcare provider before substituting Lovaza with other omega-3 fatty acid or fish oil products. 
• Take Lovaza consistently to experience the intended benefits. To aid in remembering, take your medication at the same time(s) each day. 
• Continue taking Lovaza as prescribed, even if you don't experience symptoms. It's common for individuals with high triglycerides to not experience any symptoms.  
• Maintain a healthy lifestyle alongside Lovaza as it does not replace your healthcare provider's recommendations on diet and exercise. 
• Be patient, as it may take up to 2 months to fully experience the benefits of Lovaza. 

Don'ts

• Do not crush, chew, or dissolve the capsules, as this can affect their absorption.  
• Avoid replacing Lovaza with other omega-3 fatty acid or fish oil products (including over-the-counter options, vitamins, and supplements) without consulting your healthcare provider first. These alternatives might not have the same potency or type of fatty acids as Lovaza.   

Common side effects may include:

• Upset stomach
• Burping
• Strange taste in the mouth
• Loss of appetite
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Back pain
• Skin rash
• Infection
• Flu-like symptoms

Serious side effects:

• Easy bleeding or bruising
• Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
• Changes in certain blood tests, such as liver function tests or cholesterol levels
• Chest pain or uneven heartbeats
• Signs of increased bleeding, such as blood in the urine or stools, or prolonged bleeding from cuts

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Lovaza,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, especially to fish, shellfish, soy products, or Lovaza itself.

Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history, particularly if you have:

• Alcohol use
• Diabetes
• Liver disease
• Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, and herbal products, before any surgery or dental procedure.

Lovaza should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding if you are taking Lovaza.
