Lithane (Lithium Carbonate)

Do’s

• Before starting Lithane and each time you get a refill, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
• Take Lithane by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider. The usual dosage for adults is 3 to 4 times daily, while for children it is 2 to 3 times daily.
• To lessen stomach upset, take Lithane with or right after meals.
• Drink 8 to 12 glasses (8 ounces/240 milliliters each) of water or other fluids each day while taking Lithane.
• Eat a healthy diet with normal amounts of salt (sodium) as directed by your healthcare provider while taking Lithane. Large changes in the amount of salt in your diet may affect your lithium blood levels. 
• The dosage of Lithane is based on your medical condition, lithium blood levels, and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also based on weight.
• For the best effect, take Lithane regularly at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take it at the same times every day.
• If you are taking the liquid form of Lithane, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. 
• Keep taking Lithane even if you feel well.
• If your condition does not improve or gets worse, consult your healthcare provider. It may take 1 to 3 weeks to notice an improvement in your condition.

Don’ts

• Do not change the amount of salt in your diet unless your healthcare provider tells you to do so.
• Do not use a household spoon when measuring the liquid form as it may not provide the correct dose.
• Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your healthcare provider, as some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped.

• Transient and mild nausea
• General discomfort

• Increased thirst and urination
• Fine hand tremors
• Mild diarrhea
• Weight gain
• Mild cognitive changes
• Skin rash or acne-like eruptions
• Hair loss or thinning
