Lialda (Mesalamine)

Do's

• Take Lialda orally (by mouth) with a meal, once daily, as directed by your healthcare provider. 
• Swallow the tablets whole. 
• Drink plenty of fluids while taking Lialda unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider as this helps prevent kidney stones. 
• Take Lialda consistently for optimal benefit. 
• Take it at the same time each day to aid with consistency. 
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or worsens while taking Lialda. 

Don'ts

• Don't crush, chew, or break Lialda tablets, as this can affect how the medication gets released in your colon. 

Your dosage is based on your individual needs and will be determined by your healthcare provider considering your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, weight also plays a role in dosage determination. 

Common side effects may include:

• Headache
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Skin rash
• Constipation
• Dyspepsia (indigestion)
• Fatigue
• Mild allergic reactions

Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include:

• Severe stomach pain or cramping
• Bloody diarrhea
• Signs of kidney problems, such as changes in the amount of urine, blood in the urine, or severe pain in the side and back
• Signs of liver problems, such as nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop, dark urine, or severe stomach/abdominal pain
• Allergic reactions, such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Lialda,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Before taking Lialda, tell your healthcare provider about any allergies to mesalamine, other aminosalicylates, salicylates (aspirin), sulfasalazine, or any other ingredients in Lialda. Additionally, discuss any pre-existing conditions like kidney disease, liver disease, or stomach blockage.

Lialda can increase sun sensitivity, especially for those with skin conditions like eczema. Be mindful of sun exposure, use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and report any sunburn or skin irritation to your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take, including Lialda, before any surgery.

Children and teenagers under 18 should avoid Lialda (similar to aspirin) if they have chickenpox, flu, an undiagnosed illness, or were recently vaccinated. This reduces the risk of Reye's syndrome.

Discuss the risks and benefits of Lialda with your healthcare provider if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, as it can pass into breast milk and potentially affect the infant.
