Lescol (fluvastatin) is indicated for the following purposes:

  1. Reduction of Cholesterol Levels: Lescol is used as adjunctive therapy to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B (Apo B), and triglycerides (TG), and to increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in adult patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia.
  2. Treatment for Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia: It is also used to reduce elevated TC, LDL-C, and Apo B levels in boys and post-menarchal girls, 10 to 16 years of age, with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia after failing an adequate trial of diet therapy.
  3. Risk Reduction for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) Patients: Lescol is indicated to reduce the risk of undergoing revascularization procedures in patients with clinically evident coronary heart disease (CHD).
  4. Slowing the Progression of Atherosclerosis: It is also used to slow the progression of atherosclerosis in patients with CHD.

Do’s

  • Before starting to take Lescol, read the Patient Information Leaflet available from your pharmacist and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions.
  • Take Lescol by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily in the evening. In some cases, patients may be directed to take this medication twice daily.
  • The dosage of Lescol is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, age, and other medications you may be taking. Inform your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • If you are taking other drugs to lower your cholesterol (such as bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol), take Lescol at least 1 hour before or at least 4 hours after taking these medications. These products can interact with fluvastatin, affecting its full absorption.
  • Take Lescol regularly to obtain the most benefit from it. Remember to take it at the same time(s) each day.
  • Even if you feel well, continue taking this medication. Many individuals with high cholesterol or triglycerides do not feel sick.
  • Continue following your healthcare provider's advice regarding diet and exercise. It may take up to 4 weeks before experiencing the full benefit of this drug.
