Latuda (Lurasidone)

Please read the instructions before using Latuda tablets.

Do's

• Take Latuda by mouth with food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once a day. 
• Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you use, including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal. 
• Take this drug consistently for maximum benefit. 
• Take it at the same time each day to help you remember. 
• Continue taking Latuda exactly as prescribed, even if you feel better. 
• Tell your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve or gets worse. 
• Be patient, as it may take several weeks to feel the full benefit of Latuda. 

Don'ts

• Don't adjust your dose or take Latuda more often without your healthcare provider's advice. 
• Don't stop taking this drug without consulting your healthcare provider. 
• Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while on Latuda unless your healthcare provider says it's safe, as it can increase side effects. 

The dose is determined by your healthcare provider based on your specific condition, response to treatment, age, and other medications you take. 

What are the ingredients in Latuda?

Active ingredient: lurasidone hydrochloride Inactive ingredients: mannitol, pregelatinized starch, croscarmellose sodium, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, Opadry and carnauba wax. Additionally, the 80 mg tablet contains yellow ferric oxide and FD&C Blue No. 2 Aluminum Lake

Common side effects may include:

• Drowsiness
• Tremors
• Muscle stiffness
• Slow muscle movement
• Feeling restless or unable to sit still
• Runny nose
• Sleep problems (insomnia)
• Dry mouth
• Diarrhea
• Stomach upset
• Vomiting
• Anxiety
• Agitation
• Nasal congestion
• Blurred vision

Serious side effects:

• Severe nervous system reaction, characterized by very stiff (rigid) muscles, high fever, sweating, confusion, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors, and feeling like you might pass out
• Drooling or trouble swallowing
• Fainting
• Interrupted breathing during sleep

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Latuda,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, including allergies to lurasidone or any other ingredients in Latuda.

Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history, especially if you have any of the following conditions:

• Kidney problems
• Liver problems
• Stroke
• Breast cancer
• Diabetes (or family history)
• Obesity
• Low blood pressure
• Seizures
• Low white blood cell count
• Dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's Disease)
• Trouble swallowing
• Sleep apnea

Latuda may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving, using machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you know how this drug affects you.

Do not drink alcohol or use marijuana while taking Latuda, as it can worsen dizziness and drowsiness.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal) before having surgery.

Latuda may decrease sweating, increasing the risk of heatstroke. Avoid strenuous activity in hot weather, hot tubs, and dress lightly. Drink plenty of fluids and seek cool shelter if you overheat. Get medical help right away if you experience a fever, mental changes, headache, or dizziness.

Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, and lightheadedness, which can increase the risk of falls.

Latuda should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Newborns exposed to Latuda in late pregnancy may experience muscle stiffness, shakiness, drowsiness, feeding/breathing problems, or constant crying. Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn.

The safety of Latuda during breastfeeding is unknown. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.

Do not stop taking this drug without your healthcare provider's advice, even if you feel better.

If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of taking Latuda with your healthcare provider.

Latuda (lurasidone) Drug Interactions

1. CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as ketoconazole, clarithromycin, and ritonavir, can raise Latuda levels and increase side effects. Do not take Latuda with these medications. Moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors, including diltiazem, fluconazole, and verapamil, may require a lower Latuda dose to prevent toxicity.
2. CYP3A4 Inducers: Strong CYP3A4 inducers, like rifampin, carbamazepine, and phenytoin, can reduce Latuda’s effectiveness. Avoid using them together. Moderate CYP3A4 inducers, such as modafinil and bosentan, may also decrease Latuda’s effectiveness and require dosage adjustments.
3. Opioids and Benzodiazepines: Drugs like fentanyl and clonazepam can increase the risk of drowsiness and breathing issues when taken with Latuda.
4. Other Antipsychotics or Antidepressants: Combining Latuda with medications like fluoxetine (Prozac) or bupropion (Wellbutrin) may increase the risk of side effects, including seizures and excessive sedation.
5. Blood Pressure Medications: Drugs such as amlodipine and lisinopril may raise the risk of low blood pressure when used with Latuda.
6. Food and Alcohol Interactions: Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as they can alter Latuda levels. Alcohol increases side effects like dizziness and drowsiness.
7. Other Considerations: Tell your doctor about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal products, before taking Latuda.
