Jardiance is a prescription medication that helps with the following:

  1. It lowers the risk of death from heart disease and hospital visits for adults with heart failure when the heart isn't pumping enough blood.
  2. Jardiance reduces the risk of death from heart disease in adults with type 2 diabetes who also have heart problems.
  3. It helps lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when combined with a healthy diet and exercise.

Who should not take Jardiance?

  • People with type 1 diabetes should not take Jardiance because it may increase the risk of a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (high ketones in blood or urine).
  • It is not meant for adults with severe kidney problems because it may not work properly.
  • It is unclear if Jardiance is safe or effective for children.

What are the ingredients in Jardiance?

Jardiance can cause intravascular volume contraction and may lead to renal impairment. There have been reports of acute kidney injury, some requiring hospitalization and dialysis, in patients receiving SGLT2 inhibitors, including Jardiance.

Patients should be assessed for signs and symptoms of metabolic acidosis for ketoacidosis, regardless of blood glucose level. Before initiating Jardiance, consider risk factors for ketoacidosis. Patients on Jardiance may require monitoring and temporary discontinuation of therapy in clinical situations known to predispose to ketoacidosis.

Symptomatic hypotension may occur with Jardiance, and patients should be advised to maintain adequate fluid intake to reduce the risk of hypotension.

Jardiance may lead to serious genital infections, such as necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum. Patients should promptly seek medical attention if they develop symptoms such as pain or tenderness, redness, or swelling of the genitals or the area from the genitals back to the rectum, along with a fever above 100.4°F or malaise.

Jardiance may interact with other medications, such as diuretics, potentially affecting blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Discuss potential interactions with a healthcare provider.

Jardiance is not suitable for individuals with severe or end-stage kidney disease, those on dialysis, or those with known hypersensitivity to empagliflozin. It is also not recommended for use in patients with Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice and to thoroughly discuss any potential risks or concerns before starting Jardiance.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking Jardiance? Before starting Jardiance, let your doctor know about any health conditions you have, including if you:
  • Have kidney or liver problems.
  • Have had infections in the vagina or penis.
  • Have a history of urinary tract infections or trouble urinating.
  • Are scheduled for surgery. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking Jardiance before surgery and will let you know when to start it again.
  • Are eating less or have recently changed your diet.
  • Have had issues with your pancreas, such as pancreatitis or surgery on your pancreas.
  • Drink alcohol often or binge drink.
  • Have type 1 diabetes—Jardiance is not meant for people with type 1 diabetes.
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Jardiance may harm your baby, so talk to your doctor about how to manage your blood sugar safely during pregnancy.
  • Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Jardiance can pass into breast milk and may harm your baby. Do not breastfeed while taking this medication.
Other Medications Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you take, including those bought over the counter. Some medicines can change how Jardiance works, and Jardiance may also affect other medications. Be sure to mention if you take:
  • Diuretics (water pills)
  • Insulin or other medications that lower blood sugar
Keep a list of your medications and share it with your doctor or pharmacist when starting a new one.
