Invokana (Canagliflozin)

Do’s

• Take Invokana exactly as your healthcare provider prescribes, usually once daily before the first meal. 
• Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you use to avoid potential interactions.  
• Take Invokana regularly and at the same time each day to maximize its effectiveness. 
• Inform your healthcare provider if your blood sugar levels don't improve or worsen. 
• Your dose depends on your health condition, response to treatment, and other medications. 

Common side effects of Invokana may include:

• Vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection)
• Vaginal infection
• Vulvitis
• Vulvovaginitis
• Mean glomerular filtration rate decreased
• Balanitis
• Balanoposthitis
• Increased urine output
• Nocturia (frequent urination at night)
• Polyuria (excessive urination)
• Urinary urgency
• Pollakiuria (frequent urination)

Serious side effects of Invokana are rare:

• Dehydration, which can cause low blood pressure
• Lower limb amputations (surgery to remove a toe, foot, or part of the leg)
• Serious urinary tract infection (UTI)
• Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
• Increased risk of broken bones
• Kidney damage

Inform your healthcare provider of any allergies to canagliflozin or other medications.

Discuss your medical history, particularly kidney disease, pancreatitis, dehydration, alcohol use, low blood pressure, heart failure, mineral imbalances, and previous yeast infections.

Be aware of potential dizziness or blurred vision, which may affect driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring clear vision.

Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of low blood sugar and high ketone levels.

Stress, illness, or changes in eating habits can affect blood sugar control and ketone levels. Consult your healthcare provider for potential adjustments to your treatment plan.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you're taking before any surgery.

Older adults may experience increased side effects like dizziness, dehydration, or bone loss.

Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
