Hiprex (Methenamine Hippurate)

Do's

• Take Methenamine at evenly spaced times each day, ideally at the same time(s) every day as this helps maintain consistent medication levels in your body. 
• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions for dosage. 
• Inform your healthcare provider if you experience any returning symptoms of a urinary tract infection, such as burning, painful, or frequent urination. 

Don'ts

• Don't adjust the dosage or frequency of medication without consulting your healthcare provider. 

Methenamine dosage is determined by several factors including the brand, your medical condition, age, and weight. Methenamine works best in acidic urine. Your healthcare provider might check your urine pH and recommend ways to increase acidity, like taking vitamin C, limiting certain foods (milk products, most fruits), or adjusting medications.  

Common Side Effects:

• Painful urination
• Nausea
• Upset stomach
• Difficulty urinating
• Rash

Serious Side Effects: 

• Increased urination
• Painful urination
• Blood in your urine
• Swelling
• Shortness of breath

Inform your healthcare provider of any allergies to methenamine, formaldehyde, or any other ingredients in Hiprex.

Discuss your medical history with your  healthcare provider, especially if you have:

•       Kidney problems
•       Liver problems
•       Dehydration

Before undergoing surgery, tell your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you use, including Hiprex and any other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal products.

Hiprex should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Hiprex passes into breast milk and its effects on a nursing infant are unknown. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while taking this medication.
