Esbriet (pirfenidone) tablets are indicated for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a lung disease that causes scarring and affects breathing. It helps slow the progression of IPF by reducing lung fibrosis.

It is not known if Esbriet is safe or effective for children.

Please read the instructions before using Esbriet film-coated tablets. Follow your doctor's prescription exactly. Take Esbriet (pirfenidone) with food at the same time each day to reduce nausea and dizziness. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. If prescribed the 267 mg capsule or tablet:
  • Take 1 tablet or capsule 3 times daily from days 1 to 7. Take 2 tablets or capsules 3 times daily from days 8 to 14. Take 3 tablets or capsules 3 times daily starting on day 15.
If prescribed the 801 mg brown tablet:
  • Take 1 tablet 3 times daily.
Do not take more than 3 doses per day. If you miss 14 or more days, call your doctor before resuming treatment. Never take 2 doses at once to make up for a missed dose. If you take too much Esbriet, seek medical help immediately. Your doctor will perform blood tests before starting treatment.

What are the ingredients in Esbriet film-coated tablets?

Active ingredient: pirfenidone Inactive ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal anhydrous silica, povidone, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, polyvinyl alcohol, titanium dioxide, macrogol (polyethylene glycol), talc, and iron oxide

  • Avoid other medications that increase sun sensitivity. Check with your doctor before using any new medications.
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking may reduce the effectiveness of Esbriet.
