The Emla patch contains 2 amide-type anesthetics, lidocaine and prilocaine, for numbing a small area. It is applied to normal, unbroken skin to prevent pain before certain medical procedures, such as needle insertions for injections, blood draws, and specific vaccinations (MMR, DPTP, H. influenzae b, hepatitis B).

The patch works by temporarily numbing the skin and the surrounding area, providing relief from the pain associated with medical procedures.

Emla patches should not be used in premature infants (born before 37 weeks of pregnancy).

Do’s

  • Clean and dry the area where you will apply the patch.
  • Apply the patch 1 hour before the procedure as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Press firmly around the edges to ensure a good seal.
  • Gently press the center of the patch.
  • Mark the application time on the patch.
  • Remove the patch and clean the area before your procedure.
  • Wash your hands after using the patch (unless treating hands).

Don'ts

  • Don't apply the patch to broken skin, wounds, rashes, or mucous membranes.
  • Don't use the patch near your eyes or ears.
  • Don't touch the white medicated center of the patch.
  • Don't leave the patch on longer than instructed.
  • Don't reuse the patch.
  • Don't let a child put the patch in their mouth. Consider a second covering.

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild burning at the application site
  • Itching and rash
  • Changes in skin color at the application site

Serious Side Effects:

  • Allergic Reaction: Some patients may experience an allergic reaction, which can present with symptoms such as swelling, itching, or rash. In rare cases, serious allergic reactions may occur, leading to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, or chest tightness.
  • Methemoglobinemia: This is a rare but serious side effect that may occur, presenting with brownish or greyish skin, especially around the lips and nails. If this occurs, immediate medical attention is necessary.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking an Emla patch,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have allergies to lidocaine, prilocaine, other amide anesthetics, or any ingredients in the EMLA patch.

Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider before using the EMLA patch, especially if you have:

  • A certain blood disorder (methemoglobinemia)
  • Heart disease (irregular heartbeat)
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Skin problems (infection, dermatitis, eczema)

Inform personnel before undergoing an MRI if you have an EMLA patch applied. Some patches may contain metal and cause burns during an MRI.

Ask your healthcare provider about proper patch removal and reapplication before and after an MRI.

Older adults may experience increased side effects, especially dizziness.

EMLA patch use during pregnancy should only happen if absolutely necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Lidocaine (but not prilocaine) passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while using the EMLA patch.

EMLA patches may interact with other medications. Provide your healthcare provider with a list of all medications you take to avoid potential interactions. Never adjust medication dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
