Depakene Oral Solution (Valproic Acid)

Do's

• Take Depakene exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
• Take it with food if you experience stomach upset.
• Use the provided measuring device to ensure the correct dosage.
• Take your medication regularly at the same time each day.
• Continue taking Depakene even if you feel well, especially for seizure control. Don't stop abruptly without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescriptions, non-prescription, and herbal products.

Don'ts

• Don't mix Depakene with carbonated drinks.
• Don't use Depakene for acute migraine headaches. There are other medications specifically for those.
• Don't hesitate to tell your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Dizziness
• Sleepiness
• Tremors (uncontrolled shaking)
• Hair loss
• Weight gain
• Changes in menstrual periods
• Changes in appetite
• Weakness
• Insomnia
• Headache

Serious Side Effects:

• Allergic reaction: Although rare, a serious allergic reaction to Depakene can occur. Seek immediate medical help if you notice symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
• Liver problems: Depakene can cause serious or life-threatening damage to the liver, especially within the first 6 months of therapy. Symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, abdominal pain, or persistent nausea/vomiting.
• Pancreatitis: Depakene may cause serious or life-threatening damage to the pancreas. Symptoms may include severe stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, or loss of appetite.
• Blood disorders: Depakene can affect blood clotting and may increase the risk of bleeding or bruising. Seek medical attention if you notice unusual bleeding or bruising.
• Changes in mood or behavior: Some individuals may experience changes in mood, behavior, or mood disorders while taking Depakene. 
• Birth defects: Depakene can cause serious birth defects if taken during pregnancy. 

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Depakene oral solution, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, especially to valproic acid or divalproex sodium.

Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history, particularly liver disease, pancreatitis, metabolic disorders, alcohol abuse, bleeding problems, brain disease, kidney disease, dehydration, or poor nutrition.

Be careful to avoid cuts, bruises, or injuries as Depakene may increase bleeding risk.

Disclose your use of Depakene to your healthcare provider before any surgery.

Depakene may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely. Don't drink alcohol or use marijuana while on Depakene.

Children under 6 are at higher risk for liver problems and pancreatitis.

Older adults may experience increased drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, or tremors. Be cautious to avoid falls.

Depakene can harm an unborn baby. Do not get pregnant while taking it. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you plan to become pregnant.

Depakene passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
