Cytotec (misoprostol) is indicated for reducing the risk of gastric ulcers induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in patients at high risk of complications from gastric ulcers, such as the elderly and patients with concomitant debilitating disease. It is also used in patients at high risk of developing gastric ulceration, such as those with a history of ulcers. However, Cytotec has not been shown to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs.
Do's
  • Take Cytotec with a meal and ensure that the last dose of the day is taken at bedtime.
  • Use the medicine exactly as directed by your healthcare provider and take it regularly at the same times each day to maximize its benefits.
  • Take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
  • Continue taking Cytotec for as long as you take NSAIDs, as prescribed by your physician.
  • Take Cytotec by mouth exactly as directed by your healthcare provider if you are using it to end a pregnancy.
  • Consult your healthcare provider to help you choose a suitable antacid if needed.
  Don'ts
  • Do not take antacids that contain magnesium while using misoprostol, as they may worsen the diarrhea it causes.
If you are taking Cytotec to prevent stomach ulcers while using NSAIDs (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen), the typical dosage is 200 mcg four times daily with food. If you are using Cytotec to start labor, your healthcare provider will insert it into your vagina.

  1. Hospital Use Only: Cytotec should only be used in a hospital setting if it is being used for cervical ripening, induction of labor, or the treatment of serious post-partum hemorrhage, which are outside of the approved indication.
  2. Cardiovascular Disease: Caution should be exercised when administering Cytotec to patients with pre-existing cardiovascular disease.
