Combivir (Lamivudine/zidovudine)

Do’s

• Take Combivir exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically twice daily.
• Take it with a full glass of water (8oz/240ml) unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
• Continue taking Combivir consistently, even if you feel well. Don't skip doses.
• Maintain a consistent schedule - take it at the same time each day to aid memory.

Don'ts

• Don't adjust your dosage or take Combivir more often than prescribed.
• Don't stop taking Combivir (or other HIV medications) without consulting your healthcare provider, even briefly. Stopping mid-treatment can worsen your condition or lead to drug resistance.
• Don't take Combivir if you weigh less than 30 kilograms (66 pounds).

Combivir is a combination medication with fixed doses. It's not suitable if your healthcare provider determines you need different dosages of lamivudine and zidovudine (the two components).

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Insomnia
• Dizziness
• Diarrhea
• Fever
• Muscle pain
• Rash

Serious Side Effects:

• Blood disorders (e.g., anemia, neutropenia)
• Lactic acidosis (buildup of lactic acid in the body)
• Liver problems (elevated liver enzymes)
• Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
• Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage causing tingling or numbness in extremities)
• Changes in body fat distribution (lipodystrophy)
• Allergic reactions (rare but can be severe)

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Combivir,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider if you are allergic to lamivudine, zidovudine, or any other ingredients in Combivir.

Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing health problems, especially kidney disease, liver problems, pancreatitis, alcohol use, or low blood cell counts.

Combivir may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you feel safe. Limit alcohol and marijuana use, which can worsen dizziness.

Limit alcohol consumption to reduce the risk of liver problems and pancreatitis, a side effect that can be more severe in children.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including Combivir, before any surgery.

Combivir can help reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to your baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Combivir passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding as HIV can be transmitted through breast milk.
