Coly-Mycin M (Colistimethate)

Do’s

• Use Coly-Mycin M exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, including dosage, frequency, and administration method (injection or inhalation).
• If administering the injection yourself at home, undergo proper training from your healthcare provider on preparation and usage techniques.
• Before using the injection solution, check for particles or discoloration. Discard the solution if any are present.
• Learn how to store and safely dispose of used needles, syringes, and vials.
• If using for inhalation, receive proper instructions on preparing the solution and using the nebulizer machine effectively.
• Take Coly-Mycin M at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day, ideally at the same time(s) each day, to maintain consistent medication levels in your body.
• Continue using Coly-Mycin M for the entire prescribed duration, even if your symptoms improve after a few days. Stopping it early can allow the infection to return.
• Tell your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve or worsens after using Coly-Mycin M for a while.

Don'ts

• Don't attempt to inject Coly-Mycin M yourself unless you've received proper training from your healthcare provider.
• Don't use the injection solution if it appears discolored or contains particles.

Common Side Effects:

• Numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, mouth, or tongue
• Slurred speech
• Mild skin rash
• Metallic taste in the mouth
• Oily skin
• Vaginal itching or discharge

Serious Side Effects:

• Signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Severe stomach pain, watery or bloody diarrhea
• Seizures (convulsions)
• Slow breathing
• Unusual muscle weakness
• Fever
• Kidney problems: little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath
• Blood in the urine
• Bluish lips or skin
• Chest tightness
• Cough
• Decrease in the amount of urine
• Severe burning or other irritation after using the ear drops (for Coly-Mycin S)

Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to colistimethate, polymyxin B, colistin, or any ingredients in Coly-Mycin M.

Disclose any pre-existing medical conditions to your healthcare provider before using Coly-Mycin M, especially:

• Neuromuscular diseases (myasthenia gravis)
• Kidney disease

Coly-Mycin M may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until effects subside. Limit alcohol and marijuana use.

Inform your healthcare provider about Coly-Mycin M use before any surgery or procedures involving anesthesia or muscle relaxants.

Coly-Mycin M may interfere with the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines. Inform your healthcare provider about Coly-Mycin M use before any vaccinations.

Older adults may be more susceptible to side effects, especially kidney problems.

Use Coly-Mycin M only when clearly necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

It is unknown if colistimethate passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
