Cloxapen (Cloxacillin)

Do’s

• Take Cloxapen capsules exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, including dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment.
• Take Cloxapen capsules on an empty stomach, ideally 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal for optimal absorption.
• Take Cloxapen capsules at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day, typically at the same time(s) each day, to maintain consistent medication levels in your body.
• Continue taking Cloxapen capsules for the entire prescribed duration, even if your symptoms improve after a few days. Stopping it early can allow the infection to return.
• Tell your healthcare provider if your condition worsens or persists after using Cloxapen capsules for a while.

Don'ts

• Don't take more or less medication than prescribed by your healthcare provider, or take it more frequently.
• Don't eat with meals. Avoid taking Cloxapen capsules with meals, as food can interfere with absorption.
• Don't skip doses. Try not to miss any doses. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Metallic taste in the mouth
• Mild skin rash
• Vaginal itching or discharge
• Oily skin
• Insomnia
• Dry mouth
• Sore throat
• Muscle pain
• Drowsiness
• Tiredness
• Menstrual pain
• Little or no urination
• White patches on the tongue (thrush/yeast infection)
• Itching or discharge of the vagina (vaginal yeast infection)
• Black, "hairy" tongue or sore mouth or tongue

Serious Side Effects:

• Allergic reactions such as fever, new or worsening lymph node swelling, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing
• Fast or irregular breathing
• Joint pain
• Lightheadedness or fainting (sudden)
• Puffiness or swelling around the face
• Red, scaly skin
• Shortness of breath
• Skin rash, hives, itching
• Abdominal or stomach cramps and pain (severe)
• Abdominal tenderness
• Convulsions (seizures)
• Decreased amount of urine
• Diarrhea (watery and severe), which may also be bloody
• Mental depression
• Nausea and vomiting
• Pain at place of injection
• Sore throat and fever
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Agitation or combativeness (for penicillin G procaine only)

Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to cloxacillin, penicillins (amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin), cephalosporins (cephalexin, cefuroxime), or any ingredients in Cloxapen.

Disclose any pre-existing medical conditions to your healthcare provider before using Cloxapen, especially Kidney problems

Cloxapen may interfere with the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines. Inform your healthcare provider about Cloxapen use before any vaccinations.

Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects. While newborns may be more prone to side effects.

Use Cloxapen only when clearly necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Cloxacillin passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
