Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin)

Do’s

• Take this medication by mouth with food, as directed by your healthcare provider. This is typically done once daily to ensure optimal absorption.
• Swallow the tablets whole.
• To achieve the best results, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. Establish a consistent schedule for taking this medication, ideally at the same time each day, to help you remember.
• The dosage and length of treatment will be determined based on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment. Follow your healthcare provider’s guidance in this regard.
• Complete the full prescribed amount of this medication, even if your symptoms improve before the medication is finished. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.
• Always inform your healthcare provider if your condition persists or worsens while taking Biaxin XL. Keep your healthcare provider updated on your progress.

Don’ts

• Avoid crushing or chewing the tablets, as this can cause the entire drug to be released at once, leading to an increased risk of side effects.

Common Side Effects:

• Stomach pain
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• An unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth 

Rare Side Effects:

• Fever
• Itching
• Skin rash
• Severe stomach cramps and pain
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Yellow eyes or skin 

Serious Side Effects:

• Severe dizziness
• Fainting
• Fast or irregular heartbeat
• Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as fever, new or worsening lymph node swelling, rash, itching/swelling, and trouble breathing 

Seek immediate medical attention if serious side effects occur.

In the event of severe acute hypersensitivity reactions, such as anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and other serious conditions, discontinue Biaxin XL therapy immediately and seek appropriate treatment.

You should not use Biaxin XL if you are allergic to clarithromycin or similar antibiotics. If you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking Biaxin XL, or if you have liver or kidney disease and are also taking colchicine, discuss this with your healthcare provider.

Biaxin XL may interact with other medications. Consult a healthcare provider before taking any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.

Some patients may experience tablet residue in the stool, particularly in the context of diarrhea. If this occurs and there is no improvement in the condition, switching to a different clarithromycin formulation or another antibacterial drug may be necessary.

Adverse reactions related to hepatic dysfunction and immune system responses, such as anaphylactic reactions and angioedema, have been reported with clarithromycin.

There are no specific data on the effect of Biaxin XL on the ability to drive or use machines. However, patients should be counseled regarding the potential for dizziness.
