Atrovent Nasal Spray (Ipratropium Bromide)

Do’s

• Prime the spray
• If it's your first time using it or haven't used it in over 24 hours. Point the spray away from your face while priming.
• Blow your nose gently before using the spray.
• Use the spray as directed by your healthcare provider, typically 2-3 times daily in each nostril.
• Use the medication regularly and at evenly spaced intervals for best results.
• Clean the clogged spray by holding the tip under warm running water for a minute, drying it, and repriming.

Don'ts

• Don't get the medication in your eyes. It can cause eye irritation, temporary blurred vision, and other vision problems. If it happens, flush your eyes with water and contact your healthcare provider.
• Don't increase the dose or use it more often without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Don't use sharp objects to unclog the spray.

Common side effects of Atrovent nasal spray may include:

• Nose dryness or irritation
• Headache
• Nosebleeds

Serious side effects of Atrovent nasal spray are rare but may include:

• Allergic reactions: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
• Urinary retention: This can occur, especially in individuals with a history of urinary retention or bladder neck obstruction.
• Eye problems: Although rare, eye problems such as increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma, or eye pain may occur. If you experience any changes in vision or eye discomfort, it's important to inform your Atrovent nasal spray.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Atrovent nasal spray,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your Atrovent nasal spray if you have allergies to ipratropium, other belladonna-type drugs (like atropine), or any ingredients in the spray.

Inform your Atrovent nasal spray about glaucoma (especially angle-closure type) or difficulty urinating you may have.

Atrovent may cause dizziness, blurred vision, or other vision problems. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision (driving, operating machinery) until these effects go away. Limit alcohol and marijuana use while using Atrovent.

Before any surgery, tell your Atrovent nasal spray about all medications you use, including Atrovent nasal spray.

Be aware that older adults may experience side effects like urination problems or constipation more often with Atrovent.

Discuss the risks and benefits of using Atrovent with your Atrovent nasal spray if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as its safety during these times is not fully established.
