Atacand (Candesartan)

Do's

• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions precisely regarding dosage and frequency (once or twice daily).
• Take Atacand at the same time(s) each day for optimal effectiveness.
• Atacand works with or without food, so choose what works best for you.
• Stick with it. It might take up to 6 weeks to experience the full blood pressure-lowering effect.
• Report any changes in your condition (improvement or worsening) to your healthcare provider, especially regarding blood pressure readings.

Don'ts

• Don't skip or alter doses. Stopping Atacand abruptly or changing the dosage without consulting your healthcare provider can be dangerous.
• Don't exceed the prescribed dosage. Taking more Atacand than prescribed won't necessarily improve results and may cause side effects.
• Atacand can increase sun sensitivity. Limit sun exposure, wear protective clothing, and use sunscreen.
• Don’t hesitate to ask questions. If you have any concerns about Atacand, don't hesitate to ask your healthcare provider for clarification.

Common side effects of Atacand may include:

• Back pain
• Dizziness
• Cold symptoms such as stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat
• Abnormal kidney test
• Diarrhea
• Drowsiness
• Dry mouth
• Headache
• Muscle cramps
• Sore throat
• Trouble sleeping
• Vomiting

Serious side effects of Atacand are rare but may include:

• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
• Light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
• Little or no urination
• High potassium level: Symptoms may include nausea, weakness, tingly feeling, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, or loss of movement.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Atacand,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have allergies to Atacand or any other medications.

Tell your healthcare provider about any pre-existing conditions, especially liver disease, high potassium levels, or dehydration.

Atacand may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you feel normal. Limit alcohol and marijuana use which can worsen dizziness.

Severe vomiting, diarrhea, or sweating can lead to dehydration and lightheadedness. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience these and drink plenty of fluids unless advised otherwise.

Atacand may increase potassium levels. Consult your healthcare provider before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (including Atacand) before undergoing surgery.

Older adults may be more susceptible to side effects like dizziness, high potassium, and kidney problems.

Atacand can harm an unborn baby. Avoid getting pregnant while using it. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if Atacand passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
