Astelin Nasal Spray (Azelastine)

Do’s

• Follow instructions for test sprays if it's your first time using the pump or if it's been unused for over 3 days. A fine mist indicates proper functioning.
• Gently blow your nose before using Astelin.
• Use the spray as directed by your healthcare provider, typically once or twice daily in both nostrils.
• Avoid spraying Astelin in your eyes or mouth.
• Minimize a bitter taste by inhaling gently and not tilting your head back after use.
• Use Astelin at the same time(s) each day for optimal benefit.
• Keep count of the dispensed sprays. Discard the pump after using the designated number of sprays mentioned on the packaging.

Don'ts

• Don't exceed dosage: Don't increase the dose or use Astelin more often or for longer than prescribed. It won't improve your condition faster and might cause side effects.
• Don't neglect to inform your healthcare provider: Tell your healthcare provider if your symptoms don't improve or worsen.

Common side effects of Astelin may include:

• Bitter taste in the mouth
• Headache
• Sleepiness
• Nasal discomfort
• Runny nose
• Sore throat
• Nosebleeds
• Nausea
• Dry mouth
• Fatigue
• Dizziness
• Weight increase

Serious side effects of Astelin are rare but may include:

• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
• Loss of appetite
• Stomach pain
• Itching
• Dark urine
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes
• Worsening of symptoms

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Astelin nasal spray,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have allergies to Astelin or any other medications.

Tell your healthcare provider about kidney problems. If you have any pre-existing kidney issues, discuss them with your healthcare provider before using Astelin.

Astelin may cause drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you feel normal. Limit alcohol and marijuana use which can worsen drowsiness.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (including Astelin) before undergoing surgery.

Astelin should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. It is unknown if Astelin passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
