Artane, which contains the active ingredient trihexyphenidyl, is indicated for the treatment of symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease or involuntary movements caused by the side effects of certain psychiatric drugs, such as antipsychotics like chlorpromazine and haloperidol.

Artane can also be used to stop severe muscle spasms of the back, neck, and eyes that are sometimes caused by psychiatric drugs. Additionally, it can help decrease other side effects such as muscle stiffness and rigidity.

Trihexyphenidyl belongs to a class of medications called anticholinergics, which work by blocking a certain natural substance called acetylcholine. This helps decrease muscle stiffness, sweating, and the production of saliva and improves walking ability in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

Do’s

  • Take Artane exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually 3-4 times a day with meals and at bedtime.
  • Start with a low dose and gradually increase it as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Use a special measuring spoon or device for the liquid form, not a household spoon.
  • Take Artane consistently at the same times each day.
  • Take Artane at least 1 hour before antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium.
  • Allow at least 1-2 hours between Artane and certain diarrhea medications (adsorbent antidiarrheals).
  • Take Artane at least 2 hours after ketoconazole.

  • Don't take Artane if it becomes less effective, talk to your healthcare provider about adjusting the dosage.
