Artane (Trihexyphenidyl)

Do’s

• Take Artane exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually 3-4 times a day with meals and at bedtime.
• Start with a low dose and gradually increase it as directed by your healthcare provider.
• Use a special measuring spoon or device for the liquid form, not a household spoon.
• Take Artane consistently at the same times each day.
• Take Artane at least 1 hour before antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium.
• Allow at least 1-2 hours between Artane and certain diarrhea medications (adsorbent antidiarrheals).
• Take Artane at least 2 hours after ketoconazole.
• Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully, especially if taking Artane for side effects from other medications or Parkinson's disease.
• Talk to your healthcare provider if you have a history of substance abuse, as Artane may be addictive.

Don'ts

• Don't increase your dose, take it more often, or use it longer than prescribed.
• Don't abruptly stop taking Artane, as withdrawal symptoms can occur. Talk to your healthcare provider about tapering the dose gradually.
• Don't take Artane if it becomes less effective, talk to your healthcare provider about adjusting the dosage.
• Don't hesitate to tell your healthcare provider if your condition worsens or persists.

Common side effects of Artane may include:

• Dryness of the mouth
• Blurred vision
• Dizziness
• Mild nausea or nervousness
• Upset stomach
• Decreased sweating

Serious side effects of Artane are rare but may include:

• Abdominal or stomach cramps or pain
• Bloating
• Constipation
• Delusions of persecution, mistrust, suspiciousness, or combativeness
• Excessive dryness of the mouth
• False beliefs that cannot be changed by facts
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea or vomiting

Disclose any allergies to trihexyphenidyl or other medications to your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider about your medical history, particularly if you have:

• Glaucoma
• Breathing problems (asthma, emphysema)
• Diarrhea from infection
• Heart problems (angina, heart attack, etc.)
• Blood pressure problems
• Stomach/intestinal issues (constipation, ulcers, etc.)
• Kidney or liver disease
• Mental health conditions (anxiety, dementia)
• Muscle or nerve problems
• Seizures or stroke
• Overactive thyroid
• Urinary problems
• History of substance abuse

Artane may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness or clear vision until these effects subside. Limit alcohol and marijuana use while taking Artane.

Artane can decrease saliva production, increasing gum and tooth problems. Practice good dental hygiene and schedule regular dental checkups.

Liquid Artane may contain alcohol, so be cautious if you have diabetes, alcohol dependence, or liver disease.

Artane may decrease sweating and raise your body temperature (hyperthermia) in hot weather, during exercise, or with alcohol use. Drink plenty of fluids, dress lightly, and seek cool shelter if experiencing symptoms like dizziness or headache.

Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and constipation.

Children may be more sensitive to the effects on heart rate.

Discuss the risks and benefits of using Artane during pregnancy or breastfeeding with your healthcare provider.
