Apriso (mesalamine) is indicated for the treatment and prevention of symptoms associated with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis in patients 18 years of age and older. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the colon and rectum.

Mesalamine works by reducing inflammation in the colon, which helps to alleviate symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and rectal bleeding. It is classified as a 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA) medication and is thought to work by inhibiting the production of certain chemicals that contribute to inflammation in the colon.

Do’s

  • Take it as prescribed:
  • Swallow the capsules whole, with or without food, once daily in the morning, following your healthcare provider's instructions.
  • Maintain consistency. Take Apriso at the same time each day for best results.
  • Drink plenty of fluids while taking Apriso to prevent kidney stones, unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
  • Communicate with your healthcare provider. Tell them if your condition improves or worsens.

Don'ts

  • Don't chew, crush, or open them. This affects how the medication is released in your body.
  • Avoid taking antacids at the same time as Apriso. They can interfere with the drug's absorption.
  • Don't discontinue Apriso without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • If you experience any side effects or your condition worsens, tell your healthcare provider.

Common side effects of Apriso may include:

  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Abnormal liver function tests

Serious side effects of Apriso are rare but may include:

  • Kidney stones
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Kidney damage
  • Mesalamine-induced acute intolerance syndrome (a reaction to the active drug in Apriso)
  • Allergic reaction

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Apriso,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies to Mesalamine, other aminosalicylates (balsalazide, olsalazine), salicylates (aspirin, salsalate), sulfasalazine, or any ingredients in Apriso.

Medical Conditions to Discuss. Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing conditions, especially:

  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Stomach blockage (pyloric stenosis)

Apriso can increase sun sensitivity, especially for those with skin conditions (atopic dermatitis, eczema). Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths/lamps, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing outdoors. Report sunburn, blisters, or skin redness to your healthcare provider.

Before surgery, tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including Apriso.

If you have Phenylketonuria (PKU) or a condition requiring you to limit aspartame (or phenylalanine) intake, consult your healthcare provider about using Apriso safely.

Apriso is similar to aspirin. Children and teenagers under 18 should not take Apriso or aspirin-like medications if they have chickenpox, flu, an undiagnosed illness, or have recently received a vaccine. This can increase the risk of Reye's syndrome, a serious illness.

Apriso should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Apriso passes into breast milk and may affect the nursing infant. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
