Antabuse (Disulfiram)

Do's

• Take Antabuse by mouth, with or without food, as directed by a healthcare provider, usually once daily in the morning. 
• Take this medication at bedtime in case the medication causes drowsiness. 
• Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it and take it at the same time each day to help remember.   
• Take the missed dose of Antabuse as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time of the next dose.  
• Store Antabuse at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.  

Don'ts

• Do not double the next dose or take more than what is prescribed. 
• Do not drink alcohol and avoid all alcohol-containing products while taking this medication.  
• Don't exceed a daily Antabuse maintenance dose of 500 mg, with the average being 250 mg per day.  

The dosage is based on the individual's medical condition and response to treatment. In the initial phase of treatment, a maximum of 500 mg of Antabuse daily is given in a single dose for one to two weeks.  

• Drowsiness
• Tiredness
• Headache
• Acne
• Metallic or garlic-like taste in the mouth

These effects may occur as the body gets used to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform a healthcare provider promptly. 

Refrain from consuming any alcohol, even in small amounts, while taking Antabuse and for up to 14 days after stopping the medication. Alcohol consumption during this time can lead to a severe reaction, causing symptoms such as fast heartbeat, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, flushing, and thirst. This reaction is a result of the interaction between disulfiram and alcohol in the body.

Antabuse may interact with certain medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products being used. Additionally, consult your healthcare provider before taking any new medication, changing a diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.

If any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, are experienced, seek immediate medical attention.

In addition to beverages, alcohol can be found in various other products such as mouthwash, cough medicine, cooking wine or vinegar, certain desserts, and others. Be cautious and avoid these products while taking Antabuse, as they may contain alcohol and lead to adverse reactions.
