Anafranil (Clomipramine)

Do's

• Read the medication guide provided by your pharmacist before starting Anafranil. 
• Consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions. 
• Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider. 
• Start Anafranil at a low dose to minimize side effects such as stomach upset. Administer the medication in several doses throughout the day with meals. Gradually increase the dose as your body adjusts to it. 
• Transition to taking the total dose once daily as directed by your healthcare provider after finding the best dose for you. 
• Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully. 
• Use this medication regularly at the same time(s) each day to get the most benefit. 
• Allow for 2 to 3 weeks or more before noticing the full effects of this medication. 
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition persists or worsens. 

Don'ts 

• Do not take more or less medication or more often than prescribed. 
• Do not adjust the dosage without consulting your healthcare provider. 
• Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medication unless your healthcare provider says it's safe to do so. Grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine.   
• Do not suddenly stop taking this medication without consulting your healthcare provider. Some conditions may worsen when the drug is abruptly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. 

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. 

Common Side Effects:

• Stomach upset
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Drowsiness

Some individuals may experience weight gain while taking Anafranil. Monitor your weight regularly and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.

Anafranil can raise the chance of seizures for some people, particularly those with a history of seizures. It's generally not recommended for individuals with a history of seizures.

Other Potential Side Effects:

• Increased susceptibility to infection
• Breast fibroadenosis
• Increased blood prolactin levels

Not all individuals may experience these side effects, and there may be other side effects not listed here. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Anafranil, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Do not use Anafranil if you have recently had a heart attack.

Avoid using Anafranil if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days, such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine

Some individuals may experience thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Stay alert to changes in mood or symptoms and report any new or worsening symptoms to your healthcare provider.

Anafranil has not been systematically studied for its potential for abuse, tolerance, or physical dependence. Healthcare providers should carefully evaluate patients for a history of drug abuse and follow such patients closely.

Consult a healthcare provider before taking Anafranil if you are pregnant, nursing, or administering it to children or the elderly.
