Aclovate (alclometasone dipropionate) Ointment is indicated for the treatment of various skin conditions, such as allergic reactions, eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. It is a low- to medium-strength corticosteroid that works to reduce swelling, itching, and redness associated with these types of conditions.

Do’s

  • Aclovate Ointment is for topical use only. 
  • Before applying the ointment, wash and dry your hands. 
  • Clean and dry the affected area before application.
  • Apply a thin film of medication to the affected area and gently rub in as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 2 to 3 times daily.
  • After applying the medication, wash your hands, unless you are using this medication to treat the hands.
  • Use this medication only for the condition for which it was prescribed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or gets worse after 2 weeks.

Don’ts

  • Aclovate Ointment should not be used on the face, groin, underarms, or for diaper rash unless directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Do not bandage, cover, or wrap the treated area unless directed to do so by your healthcare provider.
  • When applying this medication near the eyes, avoid getting it in the eyes because this may worsen or cause glaucoma. Also, avoid getting this medication in the eyes, nose, or mouth. If you get the medication in these areas, rinse with plenty of water.
  • Do not use this medication on a child for longer than 3 weeks in a row unless directed to do so by the healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects:

  • Skin irritation, redness, itching, or burning at the application site 
  • Stinging, swelling, or blistering
  • Skin thinning or stretch marks with prolonged use

Rarely, Aclovate Ointment may be absorbed into the bloodstream if used over large areas or for a prolonged period. This can lead to side effects like:

In studies where geriatric patients (65 years of age or older) have been treated with Aclovate Ointment, safety did not differ from that in younger patients; therefore, no dosage adjustment is recommended.

Store Aclovate Ointment properly, either in the refrigerator or at room temperature, and keep all medications away from children and pets. Additionally, discard the product when it is expired or no longer needed, following proper disposal guidelines.

If a dose of Aclovate Ointment is missed, it should be used as soon as remembered. However, if it is near the time of the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the next dose should be used at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.
