A recent study has shown that a fairly large part of teens who smoke regularly smoke contraband cigarettes. The study was probably meant to get people to tighten the manufacturing and sales of cigarettes because "Oh no! The kids are smoking them." The problem is, if these kids are smoking regularly already, stopping the production of contraband cigarettes will not stop that. Teens find a way to do almost anything. This smells like more of a cash grab.
It seems that someone making a huge profit from the sales of cigarettes is being hurt financially by the increasing sale of cigarettes. Here's the problem. Taxes on cigarettes are huge, most of the cost of buying smokes is actually more likely to be for the taxes. So when illegal cigarettes are being manufactured and then sold for, what I think must be a much lower price, why buy legal smokes? I don't smoke, but I also don't think the taxes on cigarettes should be so high that they cost the consumer more than the actual cigarette. That really isn't fair to the consumer.
Honestly, smoking will come back and cost the consumer something in the end. Most consumers know this, so as long as they have this knowledge, why stop them from killing themselves?
