Macrobid is an antibiotic drug that is used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections. The most common cause of urinary tract infections are bacteria from the bowel that live on the skin near the rectum or in the vagina which can spread and enter the urinary tract through the urethra. Once these bacteria enter the urethra they travel upwards causing infection in the bladder and sometimes other parts of the urinary tract.
This medicine will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Avoid using antacids as the ingredients can make it harder for your body to absorb Macrobid. Before using Macrobid, tell your doctor: if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding a baby; if you are using prescribed and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs such as (magnesium salicylate, choline magnesium salicylate, probenecid, sulfinpyrazone).
Your doctor will also need to know if you
- are allergic to Macrobid or any other drugs;
- have kidney disease;
- have anemia;
- have diabetes;
- have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency;
- have any type of debilitating disease;
- are urinating less than usual.
