Why Combining Lipitor With Grapefruit Is A Bad Idea?

If you have recently been diagnosed with high cholesterol, which one in five adults has, you may be told by your doctor to take Lipitor. Lipitor is a drug that has been clinically proven to reduce the bad cholesterol in your body by about 39–60%. High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, which is something that everyone would prefer to avoid. But, however, it has been said that you should avoid taking Lipitor with grapefruit juice.

It seems absurd that taking Lipitor with grapefruit juice could cause problems. Yet, as ridiculous as this sounds, it is true. Not only does grapefruit juice cause problems, but the grapefruit Lipitor interaction could cause serious complications that could be fatal.

Lipitor and Grapefruit Juice.

Grapefruit juice prevents an enzyme in your intestine from breaking down many medicines, including Lipitor. This means that the drug will stay in your body for longer and cause too much of it to enter your bloodstream. Obviously, this is not a good thing for your body to experience and can lead to very serious health complications.

When the drug cannot be properly broken down and too much enters your bloodstream, you may develop muscle disorders, liver damage, and kidney damage, and these can eventually become fatal.

Lipitor Interaction with Grapefruit

Lipitor and grapefruit interaction can occur up to three days after consuming the grapefruit, so those who think they can escape the side effects by having a grapefruit one day and the medication the next may want to face reality.

You are probably sitting there thinking, "Is there any way I can have grapefruit juice and be on Lipitor?" Well, the answer is a sad no. If you have reached this point, you now have two options. Continue taking Lipitor and stop having any grapefruit juice. Yes, it will be hard, but unless death is an appealing option, you may want to give up the juice or go with the second option. If you cannot live without grapefruit juice, you may want to consider talking to your doctor about an alternate form of medication.

In the end, Lipitor and grapefruits don't mix. Life is about choices, and not all of them are easy.
