Actikerall is a medication used to treat a skin condition called actinic keratosis. Actinic keratoses are small crusty, scaly, or crumbly patches of skin that commonly occur in people who have had a lot of sun exposure. These skin changes may be red or light brown and can be dry or rough to the touch. Actinic keratoses are often easier to feel than see
Actikerall contains two active ingredients: fluorouracil and salicylic acid. Fluorouracil is a cytotoxic antimetabolite, while salicylic acid is a keratolytic.
Salicylic acid works by breaking down keratin, a protein that forms part of the skin structure. This results in the shedding of skin cells and softening of the skin in the treated area, which makes it easier for the fluorouracil to penetrate into the skin lesion.
Fluorouracil interferes with the growth of abnormal cells. It causes the death of abnormal cells present in actinic keratosis lesions, leading to the shedding of the lesion and the formation of new, healthy skin cells.
