Zofran (Ondansetron)

Do's

• Take Zofran orally within 30 minutes before chemotherapy begins. 
• Take the dosage ranging from 4 to 24 mg, depending on the specific chemotherapy agents being used. 
• Take Zofran up to 3 times a day for 1 to 2 days after chemotherapy. 
• Take Zofran by mouth 1 hour before the start of surgery for the prevention and treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting. 
• Use a usual dosage of 16 mg for this purpose 1 hour before the induction of anesthesia. 
• Take Zofran by mouth 1 to 2 hours before the start of radiation treatment for nausea and vomiting prevention. 
• Taken Zofran with or without food, as directed by a healthcare provider. 
• Follow the healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosage adjustments based on age and weight, especially for children. 
• Use a special measuring spoon or device for the liquid form of Zofran to measure the prescribed dose. 
• Take any other doses as directed by a healthcare provider. 
• Take Zofran regularly to get the most benefit from it. 
• Consult a healthcare provider for personalized dosage and administration instructions. 

Don'ts

• Don't take more medication or take it more often than prescribed. 

The usual maximum dose in patients with severe liver problems is 8 milligrams in 24 hours. 

Common Side Effects:

• Headache
• Drowsiness
• Tired feeling
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Chills
• Weakness

Serious Side Effects:

• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
• Blurred vision or temporary vision loss
• High levels of serotonin in the body, which may manifest as agitation, hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, and fainting
• Confusion
• Dizziness
• Fast heartbeat
• Fever
• Trouble breathing
• Decrease in the frequency of urination
• Decrease in the urine volume
• Difficulty with passing urine
• Painful urination
• Arm, back, or jaw pain

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and others may occur. If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects, seek medical advice promptly. 

Zofran should not be used if you are allergic to ondansetron or similar medicines such as dolasetron, granisetron, or palonosetron.

Zofran should not be used if you are also using apomorphine (Apokyn). Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Zofran is not expected to harm an unborn baby; however, informing your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding is recommended.

Zofran is not approved for use in children younger than 4 years old.
