Keflex (cephalexin) is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible strains of specific microorganisms. The indications for Keflex include:

  • Otitis Media:
    • Keflex is indicated for the treatment of otitis media caused by susceptible isolates of Streptococcus Pneumonia, Haemophilus Influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Moraxella catarrhalis.
  • Skin and Skin Structure Infections:
    • Keflex is indicated for the treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • Bone Infections:
    • Keflex is indicated for the treatment of bone infections caused by susceptible isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus mirabilis.
  • Genitourinary Tract Infections:
    • Keflex is indicated for the treatment of genitourinary tract infections, including acute prostatitis, caused by susceptible isolates of Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella pneumonia.

Keflex is generally effective in the eradication of Streptococci from the nasopharynx; however, substantial data establishing its efficacy in the subsequent prevention of rheumatic fever are not available at present.

Do's  

  • Take Keflex by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually every 6 to 12 hours with or without food.  
  • Shake the bottle well before each dose if using the suspension.   
  • Measure the dose carefully using a special measuring device/spoon.  
  • Take Keflex at evenly spaced times to maximize its effectiveness.  
  • Take this medication at the same time(s) every day to help you remember.  
  • Continue taking Keflex until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days.  
  • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as directed by your healthcare provider. 

Don'ts 

  • Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.   
  • Do not stop the medication too early, as it may result in a return of the infection.

Dose adjustments are recommended for patients with renal impairment. The dosage should be carefully adjusted based on the patient's renal function to avoid potential complications.

Keflex is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalexin or other members of the cephalosporin class of antibacterial drugs.
