Haldol (Haloperidol)

Do's

• Take Haldol exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, with or without food. 
• Use the provided measuring dropper or a measured oral syringe from your healthcare provider to ensure accurate dosing if using the liquid form. 
• Take Haldol regularly at the same time(s) each day for optimal results as this helps maintain consistent medication levels in your body. 
• Inform your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve or worsen while taking Haldol as they can assess your situation and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

Don'ts

• Don't stop taking Haldol abruptly without consulting your healthcare provider as it can worsen your condition. 

Your dosage will be determined based on your specific medical condition and response to the medication. Your healthcare provider will likely develop a plan to gradually decrease your dosage if necessary. 

Common Side Effects:

• Drowsiness
• Headache
• Dizziness or spinning sensation
• Uncontrolled muscle movements
• Restlessness or anxiety
• Sleep problems (insomnia)
• Nausea and vomiting
• Dry mouth
• Constipation
• Blurry vision
• Drop in blood pressure upon standing
• Rapid heartbeat

Serious Side Effects: 

• Involuntary movements, such as facial/muscle twitching
• tongue thrusting
• chewing movements
• puffing or puckering of the mouth
• uncontrollable shaking. 
• very stiff (rigid) muscles
• high fever
• Sweating
• Confusion
• fast or irregular heartbeats
• tremors
• a feeling like you might pass out.
• Allergic reaction: Such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Haldol,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have and your medical history, especially nervous system problems, Parkinson's, bipolar disorder, urination problems, glaucoma, heart problems, thyroid issues, seizures, or low white blood cell count.

Haldol may affect your heart rhythm. Tell your healthcare provider about any heart conditions, family history of heart problems, or medications that may affect your heart rhythm.

Haldol can cause dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you feel safe doing so. Limit alcohol and marijuana use.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take before surgery.

Haldol may increase your risk of heat stroke. Avoid strenuous activities in hot weather, drink plenty of fluids, and dress lightly. Seek medical attention if you experience fever, confusion, headache, or dizziness.

Children and older adults may be more sensitive to side effects, especially uncontrolled movements, drowsiness, dizziness, and difficulty urinating.

Haldol should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider, especially if planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Do not stop taking Haldol without your healthcare provider's advice, even if you experience side effects.
