Motilium (Domperidone)

Do’s

• Take it as prescribed by your healthcare provider: This includes following the recommended dosage and frequency. Don't take more than prescribed.
• Take it before meals: Take Motilium 10-30 minutes before meals for maximum effectiveness in relieving indigestion and nausea.
• Swallow whole with water: Don't crush, chew, or break the tablet.
• Read food labels: If your indigestion is caused by certain foods, avoid them while using Motilium.
• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, especially if you're experiencing nausea or vomiting.

Don'ts

• Don't take it for more than 4 weeks without consulting your healthcare provider: Motilium is typically meant for short-term relief.
• Don't take it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding: Discuss alternative options with your healthcare provider if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Don't take it if you have stomach bleeding or a perforated ulcer: Motilium may worsen these conditions.
• Don't take it with other medications without consulting your healthcare provider: Motilium can interact with certain medications.
• Don't use it as a substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle changes: Motilium is meant to provide temporary relief, not a long-term solution. If you experience frequent indigestion, address the underlying cause through dietary adjustments or lifestyle changes.

Common side effects of Motilium (domperidone) may include:

• Dry mouth
• Headache
• Nervousness
• Depression
• Dizziness
• Tiredness
• Irritability
• Sleepiness or drowsiness
• Fits or seizures
• Agitation
• Regurgitation
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Nausea
• Changes in appetite
• Heartburn
• Rash or itchy skin
• Itchy eyes and crusty eyelids with discharge
• Mouth ulcers or cold sores
• Lowering of sexual drive (libido) in men

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

• Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, or throat causing difficulty in swallowing or breathing, along with an itchy, lumpy rash (hives) or nettle rash (urticaria), indicating an allergic reaction
• Uncontrolled movements, including irregular eye movements, unusual movements of the tongue, and abnormal posture such as a twisted neck, trembling, and muscle stiffness
• Very fast or unusual heartbeat, which could be a sign of a life-threatening heart problem
• Seizures

Movicol is not recommended for children below the age of 2 years old. Their digestive systems are still developing and may react differently to the medication.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking Movicol to avoid dehydration. As Movicol works by drawing water into the stool, proper hydration ensures your body has enough fluids to function normally.

Consult your healthcare provider before using Movicol if you have certain medical conditions like heart problems, severe kidney disease, or bowel obstruction. Movicol may not be suitable in these cases.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you're taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, before using Movicol. Some medications may interact with Movicol and affect its effectiveness.

In rare cases, long-term use of Movicol might lead to electrolyte imbalances, particularly low potassium levels. Your healthcare provider may monitor your electrolytes if you're using Movicol for an extended period.

While uncommon, allergic reactions to Movicol ingredients are possible. If you experience symptoms like rash, itching, or wheezing after taking Movicol, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider immediately.
