Campral (Acamprosate Calcium)

Do’s

• Take it as prescribed: Follow your healthcare provider's instructions on dosage (usually 3 times a day) and frequency.
• Take it consistently: Aim to take Campral at the same times each day to maximize its effectiveness.
• Swallow whole: Take the tablets whole, do not crush or chew them.
• Continue taking it: Even if you resume drinking alcohol, keep taking Campral and inform your healthcare provider immediately.

Don'ts

• Don't change your dose without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Don't take Campral more frequently or for longer than prescribed. This won't improve your condition faster and might increase side effects.
• Don’t skip doses: Taking Campral inconsistently can reduce its effectiveness.

Common side effects:

• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Loss of appetite
• Insomnia
• Sweating
• Nausea
• Dry mouth
• Headaches
• Joint or muscle pain
• Itching
• Gas
• Digestive discomfort
• Anxiety

Serious side effects (seek medical attention if experienced):

• Mental/mood changes, including severe depression or thoughts of suicide
• Signs of kidney problems, such as changes in urine output, swelling, or feeling tired or short of breath
• Stomach or abdominal pain that doesn't go away
• Black stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
• Seizures
• Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing
• Serious heart symptoms, such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in the chest, shortness of breath, or sudden dizziness or passing out

Disclose any allergies to acamprosate or other Campral ingredients to your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have kidney disease.

Campral may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid activities requiring alertness (driving, machinery) until you feel normal.

Limit consumption of both, as they can worsen dizziness or drowsiness with Campral.

Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take before any surgery.

Campral should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding as it's unknown if Campral passes into breast milk.
