Savaysa (Edoxaban Tosilate)

Do’s

• Take Savaysa exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically once daily.
• Take it with or without food, depending on your preference.
• Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal) as they can interact with Savaysa.
• If swallowing the tablet is difficult, crush it and mix it with 2-3 ounces of water or applesauce. Consume the entire mixture immediately and don't prepare a supply in advance.
• Seek specific instructions from your healthcare provider if administering Savaysa through a gastric tube.
• Use Savaysa consistently to maximize its effectiveness. Taking it at the same time each day can help you remember.

Don'ts

• Don't stop taking Savaysa without consulting your healthcare provider, as this could worsen your condition.
• Don't crush or pre-mix Savaysa unless you have swallowing difficulties and have spoken to your healthcare provider.

Common side effects:

• Bleeding
• Low red blood cell count (anemia)
• Rash
• Abnormal liver function tests

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

• Serious bleeding that cannot be controlled
• Severe bleeding, such as coughing up or vomiting blood
• Bleeding that leads to prolonged or uncontrollable bleeding
• Blood clots around the spinal cord if a spinal tap or spinal anesthesia is performed
• Increased risk of forming blood clots in the heart, which can lead to stroke or other complications for people with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation
• Allergic reactions
• Severe symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, may indicate an overdose and require immediate medical attention

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Savaysa,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider of any allergies you have before taking Savaysa. This includes allergies to edoxaban itself or any other ingredients in the medication.

Tell your healthcare provider about your medical history, particularly if you have liver disease, kidney disease, bleeding problems, blood disorders, recent major surgery, or a history of falls or strokes. These conditions can affect how Savaysa works or increase the risk of side effects.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products) before having surgery or any medical/dental procedures. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your Savaysa dosage or ask you to temporarily stop taking it.

Limit alcohol consumption while taking Savaysa. Daily use of alcohol can increase your risk for stomach bleeding.

Savaysa can cause heavy bleeding. Be careful to avoid cuts, bruises, and injuries.

During pregnancy, Savaysa should only be used when clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

It is unknown if Savaysa passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.

Your healthcare provider will do a blood test to check your kidney function before starting Savaysa. Kidney function can affect how well this medication works.

Do not stop taking Savaysa unless directed by your healthcare provider. Stopping it early increases your risk of blood clots.

Get medical help right away if you experience symptoms of a blood clot such as weakness on one side of the body, trouble speaking, chest pain, or trouble breathing.

There is a risk of bleeding near the spinal cord after certain spinal procedures with Savaysa. This can lead to paralysis. Discuss the risks and benefits of any spinal procedures with your healthcare provider.
