Lidoderm Patch (Lidocaine)

Do’s

• Lidoderm Patch should only be applied to normal intact skin. The dosage is based on the individual's medical condition and response to treatment.
• Remove the protective liner and apply the patch to the most painful area of the skin. The prescribed number of patches should be applied as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once a day. 
• Depending on the specific product, the patch may be left on the skin for up to 8 or 12 hours. Follow the instructions carefully. If a smaller patch is needed, it may be cut with scissors before the liner is removed.
• Some brands may tolerate brief exposure to water, such as during a short shower, but it is best to pat dry gently if the patch gets wet. 
• After each application, hands should be washed thoroughly. If accidental contact with the eyes occurs, they should be washed immediately with water.
• Used patches should be folded with the sticky sides together and discarded out of the reach of children and pets to prevent accidental swallowing or application.
• If the condition does not improve, or worsens, or if there are concerns about a serious medical problem, medical help should be sought immediately.

Don’ts

• Lidoderm Patch should not be applied to skin that is broken or irritated.
• Do not apply more than three patches once a day or leave any patch on for longer than the stated time period.
• Avoid getting the patch wet, as it may not stick to the skin. 
• Avoid getting the medication in the eyes or mucous membranes.
• Used patches still contain some medication but should not be reused.

Common Side Effects: 

• Local burning, bruising, blisters, itching, irritation
• Lightheadedness
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Nervousness
• Blurred vision
• Low blood pressure 

Less Serious Side Effects: 

• Mild irritation, redness, or swelling where the medication is applied
• Numbness in places where the medicine is accidentally applied 

Potential Adverse Reactions: 

• During or immediately after treatment with the Lidoderm Patch, the skin at the site of application may develop blisters, bruising, burning sensation, depigmentation, dermatitis, discoloration, edema, erythema, exfoliation, irritation, papules, petechia, pruritus, or vesicles. These reactions are generally mild and transient, resolving spontaneously within a few minutes to hours.

Serious Side Effects: 

• Uneven heartbeats
• Drowsiness
• Confusion
• Tremors
• Seizures
• Blurred vision

If any of these serious side effects occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Before using Lidoderm Patch, inform your healthcare provider if you have an allergy to lidocaine or any other part of the patch.

If you have broken skin, open wounds, swollen skin, numbness, or an inability to feel pain in the area where the patch will be applied, it should be discussed with your healthcare provider. 

An overdose of Lidoderm can lead to fatal side effects if too much lidocaine is absorbed through the skin and into the blood. Use the smallest amount of Lidoderm Patch needed to numb the skin or relieve pain and avoid using large amounts of the patch or covering treated skin areas with a bandage or plastic wrap without medical advice. The body may absorb more lidocaine if the patch is applied over large skin areas or if heat, bandages, or plastic wrap are used on treated skin areas.

There are no adequate studies done on Lidoderm Patches to determine safe and effective use in pregnant women. Additionally, lidocaine may enter breast milk in trace amounts, so caution is advised before using it in nursing mothers
