Tekturna (Aliskiren)

Do’s

• Before starting to take Tekturna, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider for clarification.
• Take Tekturna by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily. It can be taken with or without food, but choose one way and stick to it for each dose.
• The dosage of Tekturna is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Take this medication regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it
• Continue taking Tekturna even if you feel well, as most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. It may take up to 2 weeks before you experience the full benefit of this medication.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (i.e. if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase).

Don’ts

• Avoid taking Tekturna with high-fat foods, as they may decrease the drug's absorption by the body.
• Do not take Tekturna with fruit juices (such as apple, grapefruit, or orange) as they may also decrease the absorption of the drug.

Common Side Effects: 

• Dizziness
• Influenz

Serious Side Effects: 

• Angioedema, which can cause swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, arms, legs, or the entire body 

If you experience any of these serious symptoms, seek medical help immediately.

Neonatal Adverse Effects:

• Skull hypoplasia
• Anuria
• Hypotension
• Renal failure
• Deat

Discuss any side effects or concerns with your healthcare provider. If you experience any side effects that bother you or do not go away, inform your healthcare provider.

Additionally, if you have any signs or symptoms suggesting a severe allergic reaction or angioedema, consult your healthcare provider immediately.

Consult a healthcare provider before taking any medication, including Tekturna. This ensures that the use of the drug is safe, appropriate, and effective for the individual.

Properly discard Tekturna when it is expired or no longer needed. It should not be flushed down the toilet or poured into a drain unless instructed to do so.

Tekturna has specific warnings related to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Take Tekturna exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider, and if pregnancy is detected, the medication should be discontinued as soon as possible. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Tekturna.

Patients whose renal function may depend in part on the activity of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) or those receiving certain other medications may be at particular risk for developing acute renal failure on Tekturna. Monitoring of serum potassium periodically is recommended, as drugs that affect the RAAS can cause hyperkalemia

In placebo-controlled clinical trials, discontinuation of therapy due to a clinical adverse event, including uncontrolled hypertension, occurred in a small percentage of patients treated with Tekturna. Be aware of potential adverse events and consult a healthcare provider if any concerns arise.
